Symposium Targets Critical Manufacturing Topics for Emerging Growth Companies
Date:5/6/2008

RAMSEY, N.J., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical Product Outsourcing magazine, the fastest-growing publication in medical technology manufacturing, offers the latest installment of its successful symposium series.

Building on the success of last year's East Coast event, the upcoming Medical Product Outsourcing Symposium brings the educational and networking format to San Mateo, Calif., on May 21, with a program titled: Maximizing the Outsourcing Experience: Efficient & Effective Practices for Medical Device Manufacturers. The one-day interactive program, held at the San Mateo Marriott, is designed to meet the needs of small to midsize medical device companies navigating the waters of contract manufacturing -- with feedback and input from firms of all sizes throughout the product development value chain.

"The goal of our conferences always has been to bring OEMs together with outsourcing service providers, to educate, to network and to provide a forum for issues affecting the OEM-supplier relationship," said Howard Revitch, group publisher of Medical Product Outsourcing. "We got such positive feedback from the event in Waltham, Mass., last November, that we're bringing the successful format to the West Coast to help the numerous emerging growth and start-up device manufacturers in the Bay Area learn about all the tools outsourcing suppliers can offer to help their businesses grow."

Outsourcing relationships are critical to bringing new products to market, and they are particularly valuable for emerging growth firms launching new products and exploring new market opportunities. Attendees will hear from and interact with leading manufacturers and suppliers during in-depth conference sessions and powerful networking opportunities specific to this industry sector.

"MPO Symposium is an excellent forum for medical device manufacturers to sharpen their skills and network with industry professionals," said Nancy M. Briefs, President and CEO of Eleme Medical and former chairperson of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association. "It is a unique conference that I highly recommend attending."

The symposium kicks off with a keynote address by Joe Kiani, CEO and chairman of Irvine, CA-based Masimo. Kiani will share his emerging-growth company success story about how he turned a small start-up into a multimillion-dollar company that recently went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Other items covered during the daylong program will include Making the Current Medical Device IPO and M&A Environment Work for You; product design and development outsourcing tips; managing outsourcing relationships in an intense, high-growth environment; and successful reimbursement strategies. A networking luncheon and cocktail reception following the program also are included.

Other key speakers for the Medical Device Outsourcing Symposium include Jim Douglas, Medical Device Investment Banker, Piper Jaffray; Mary Walchack, Manager, Reimbursement, BD; Douglas Hiemstra, founder and president of Hiemstra Product Development; and Bill Ellerkamp, CEO, ExtruMed.

As a value-added feature prior to the Symposium on May 21, a pre-conference workshop will be held on the afternoon of May 20 called Risk Avoidance Writing: Critical Steps to Creating Powerful Documents & Mitigating Liability, presented by Nancy Singer, Esq., president, Compliance-Alliance, a former prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice, in Washington, DC; and Virginia Perry, partner/founder Perry-D'Amico and Associates. The workshop will explain proven techniques for creating accurate documents that will help, rather than embarrass, those working in the medical device industry. The workshop leader will discuss common words and phrases that, when taken out of context, have humiliated individuals and hurt organizations. She will help companies develop a plan to train employees on what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate documentation practices.
