SurgiQuest Announces First Procedure Using AirSeal(TM) Access System
Date:4/4/2008

ORANGE, Conn., April 4, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- SurgiQuest, Inc. today announced the first true single port laparoscopic procedure utilizing the AirSeal(TM) access system.

At Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA, Dr. David Earle, Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery, performed a gallbladder removal procedure through a single 12mm access port in the umbilicus (belly button). The AirSeal system creates an invisible barrier that does not rely on gaskets or seals. This provides unobstructed access to the cavity without loosing intra-abdominal pressure and enabled Dr .Earle to simultaneously utilize up to three instruments through a single 12mm port.

"As we move toward performing surgical procedures in a less invasive way, maintenance of patient safety is our primary concern," said Dr. Earle. "Use of the AirSeal access system allowed me to use multiple standard instruments through a single lumen port, reducing the number of incisions we had to make from four to one. Due to its unique ability to maintain a seal with no mechanical barrier, many obstacles to standard laparoscopy were overcome. This type of platform technology will not only change the way we think about minimally invasive surgery, it will change the way we do it."

"This first clinical experience with the AirSeal access system is an important milestone for SurgiQuest," said Kurt Azarbarzin, Founder and CEO of SurgiQuest. "We are pleased with the positive feedback and interest from surgeons worldwide who see the AirSeal system as a very effective solution to many of the challenges they face in advancing the field of minimally invasive surgery."

About the AirSeal(TM) access system:

The AirSeal(TM) access system presents a significant technological shift in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). By eliminating seals and gaskets from access ports, the AirSeal system provides unobstructed access to the abdominal cavity without loosing intra-abdominal pressure. This unencumbered approach to MIS is enabling both new procedure development and new instrument platforms.

SurgiQuest's technologies for single port, endoluminal, and N.O.T.E.S. surgeries will be the topic of several presentations at the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) in Philadelphia April 8-12.

SurgiQuest, Inc. is a private venture-backed company, founded in May 2006. It develops, manufactures, and markets access technology for minimally invasive surgery.
