-- Unique Interior Design and Innovative Programs Support Seniors with

Memory Loss --

MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sunrise Senior Living (NYSE: SRZ) today announced the opening of it's first community designed to feature the company's three distinctive programs serving residents with early, mild or advanced cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer's disease. The new memory care community is located about 40 miles northwest of Chicago in Barrington, Ill.

According to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Illinois, more than 210,000 people are living with Alzheimer's disease in the state today and close to 5 million people are living with it across the United States. These numbers are expected to grow substantially as the population ages and more opportunities are made available to diagnose the disease.

"As more seniors develop cognitive impairments, increasing numbers of families are straining to provide care for their aging loved ones while managing other obligations," said Caryl Barnes, area vice president for Operations at Sunrise. "This individualized level of service offered through our programs reassures families that their loved ones enjoy appropriate levels of stimulation in a comfortable environment. It gives us great pleasure to introduce our newest concept during National Alzheimer's Awareness Month."

One of these programs is Terrace Club, which was developed for those with early memory loss and age-related forgetfulness. The program is based on recent research revealing that structured mental exercises, certain foods and special activities may slow the loss of brain function. The goal is to offer a stimulating environment that encourages independence and socialization among people who all can relate to living with early memory loss.

Sunrise's award-winning Reminiscence program is also available in the community. Developed in 1995, the Reminiscence program offers a more secure, close-knit environment featuring life skill activities and structured opportunities for residents to reminisce with family, friends and Sunrise team members. The multisensory experience in this area helps promote a pleasant and comfortable living environment through soothing and familiar smells, sights and sounds.

Lastly, the newly created Edna's Place, named after an early Sunrise resident, is an intimate cluster of suites located in the Reminiscence Neighborhood for residents with greater needs due to significant confusion and physical frailty. Residents in Edna's Place receive a higher level of attention in a more tranquil environment to minimize disorientation and agitation they may experience in a larger population.

The new 37,400 square foot, two-story community located at 510 W. Northwest Highway in Barrington, Ill. will employ 55 team members who will serve more than 50 residents needing assistance with activities like bathing, dressing, eating, medication management and memory care. Design features include elegantly appointed and spacious common areas, dining room, bistro, shaded porches and comfortable lounges and sitting areas. Residents may choose from a number of studio or one bedroom floor plans and are encouraged to furnish their suites with personal furniture and items to make their new Sunrise home familiar and comfortable. Also, residents have the opportunity to bring their own pet with them to Sunrise.

Sunrise of Barrington is one of 24 senior living communities Sunrise operates in the greater Chicago area under the Sunrise, Brighton Gardens and Fountains brand names.
