Sunrise Senior Living Opens First Custom-Built Community for Early, Mid and Late Stage Alzheimer's Care Programs

MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sunrise Senior Living (NYSE: SRZ) today announced the opening of it's first community designed to feature the company's three distinctive programs serving residents with early, mild or advanced cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer's disease. The new memory care community is located about 40 miles northwest of Chicago in Barrington, Ill.

According to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Illinois, more than 210,000 people are living with Alzheimer's disease in the state today and close to 5 million people are living with it across the United States. These numbers are expected to grow substantially as the population ages and more opportunities are made available to diagnose the disease.

"As more seniors develop cognitive impairments, increasing numbers of families are straining to provide care for their aging loved ones while managing other obligations," said Caryl Barnes, area vice president for Operations at Sunrise. "This individualized level of service offered through our programs reassures families that their loved ones enjoy appropriate levels of stimulation in a comfortable environment. It gives us great pleasure to introduce our newest concept during National Alzheimer's Awareness Month."

One of these programs is Terrace Club, which was developed for those with early memory loss and age-related forgetfulness. The program is based on recent research revealing that structured mental exercises, certain foods and special activities may slow the loss of brain function.
