Summit Health Helps Employers Navigate the 'Wild West' of Flu Shots and Workplace Health Screenings

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Wild West is alive and well, at least in the world of employee health screenings. While national and local regulations cover finger sticks and blood draws, no single organization or regulatory body has set national standards and monitors on-site health screenings or flu shot programs.

As cold and flu season approaches, a new white paper from wellness screening provider Summit Health, Inc. tackles this potential employer risk. The complimentary report focuses on four critical big-picture questions to ask a wellness screening vendor:

    - Are they legal?
    - Are they secure?
    - Is their staff qualified?
    - Are they insured?

The report covers such topics as HIPAA compliance, confidentiality, staff licensing and training, liability insurance, pricing policies, account management, integration issues, health coaching skills, data quality and the overall participant experience. Besides examining the best practices for vendor selection, the paper features an appendix of sample questions that should be asked of a potential screening partner during the selection process--a significant time-saving step for employers.

Summit Health experts point out that corporate HR departments tend to think of health screenings as a commodity rather than health care, and are unaware of many federal and state regulations for health screening procedures. Unfortunately, the employer pays the price when a screening goes awry.

"Selecting the wrong partner can lead to legal and regulatory issues, loss in employee confidence, and a significant setback for a company's wellness program," explained Richard Penington, president and CEO of Summit Health. "Some newer flu shot and wellness vendors don't always have the people and financial resources, or knowledge, to meet every federal and state requirement or best practice--they may offer a lower per-person cost, but it could very well be at the expense of quality, safety and legality."
