Strike at Millbrae Nursing Home Called Off
Date:4/14/2008

Last-Minute Intervention by Assemblyman Mullin Leads to Cooling-Off Period

MILLBRAE, Calif., April 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Healthcare workers at Emmanuel Millbrae Convalescent Hospital called off their planned three-day strike on Monday, after Assemblyman Gene Mullin asked them to give the facility's ownership another chance at working out a solution that preserves workers' rights to stand up for improved resident care.

Caregivers at the nursing home, who are members of SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West, had announced last week their plan to strike and picket the home for three days over the actions of the new owners, A&C Health Care Services, which healthcare workers feel have jeopardized the level of care at Emmanuel Millbrae.

Healthcare workers have raised concerns that the actions of A&C Health Care Services could threaten resident care at the 140-bed nursing home. For example, the same company operates Camden Convalescent Hospital in Campbell, where over the last two years, inspectors have found widespread problems with fire safety and pharmacy services.

Caregivers at Emmanuel Millbrae launched a previous, 24-hour strike in February over unfair labor practices at the facility, including the unjust firing of pro-union workers and unilateral reductions in benefits and paid time off. The complaint related to those charges is still pending with the National Labor Relations Board, and a hearing has been scheduled for April 21.

The 150,000-member SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West is the largest hospital and healthcare union in the western United States and represents every type of healthcare worker, including nurses, professional, technical and service classifications. Our mission is to achieve high-quality healthcare for all.
