Date:2/17/2009

Will ensure at least 99.99 percent uptime for Interactive Patient Care system

MAYNARD, Mass., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Stratus Technologies, Inc. announced that Allen Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of interactive patient communication systems, has adopted the high availability capabilities of Stratus Avance software as a technology foundation for its flagship Vigo product line.

Allen Technologies' Vigo System serves the needs of three distinct clients: patients, healthcare providers and hospital IT staff. For patients, the Vigo system enables health care facilities to deliver basics, such as television, Internet, music, movies, VoIP and patient education. For caregivers, the Vigo System provides bedside access to a hospital's advanced clinical applications, such as medication management, x-rays and dietary systems. For hospital IT staff, the Vigo system provides high availability at various levels throughout its architecture, thereby minimizing service and maintenance issues.

By using the Avance Software and other failure avoidance techniques, the Vigo System replaces single points of failure with redundant systems. A unit may be an application, server or disk drive. If a unit fails, the Avance software rolls over automatically to a backup unit.

"From updating patients' electronic medical records at bedside to checking medication dispensing instructions, Vigo Systems become a critical information platform for healthcare providers," explained Gary Cowsert, president and CEO of Allen Technologies. "Avance brings mission-critical levels of availability at a cost-effective price to Vigo's servers, without added complexity," he said.

Stratus Technologies' Award-winning Avance software provides high availability instantly and automatically upon installation. Unlike other solutions, failover scripting, repeated testing, and making applications cluster-aware are unnecessary and restarts are nearly eliminated. Stratus Avance technology detects errors and continues processing during all but the most catastrophic hardware and software faults. Avance software's 99.99 percent uptime routinely means no application interruptions, data loss or client disconnects.

"Health care is an industry that inherently understands the need for highly available systems," said Alan Gilbert, Stratus healthcare practice leader. "For solutions providers serving this industry, Avance offers leading-edge high availability, together with embedded virtualization capabilities, without the complexity and need for special skills that other approaches can require."
