The following is a statement from Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor Dr. Rufus Glasper:
“Today, we received some very sad news about the passing of a long standing member of the Maricopa family, John Waltrip. He served as President of Glendale Community College for more than 20 years and was critical to the growth of the Maricopa Community Colleges’ presence in the West Valley. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. The contributions he made to our students and our system will not soon be forgotten.”

In an interview conducted in summer 2012, Dr. Waltrip said of his time at Glendale, “Glendale Community College was an instructors dream - everything was brand new. We were lucky that our college…got most of its original buildings as permanent construction. We were so fortunate …everything was clean and beautiful. It’s a beautiful campus and a beautiful location, extremely pleasant place to work.”
“I consider it an outstanding if not the most outstanding educational institution in this country,” Waltrip continued. “It’s been a pleasure…to work [at Glendale] these many years. I’m now retired, enjoying retirement but not as much as working with our district.”
