Statement of SEIU President Andy Stern Regarding UHW-W's Confirmation of Illegal Delegate Election Process
Date:4/16/2008

WASHINGTON, April 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- SEIU President Andy Stern issued the following statement today in response to the now-confirmed illegal delegate elections of SEIU local union United Healthcare Workers-West (UHW-W):

"Any organization that claims it is the voice for member democracy and then holds an illegal election that excludes most rank and file members from running for office tarnishes democracy by its hypocrisy."

The 1.9 million member Service Employees International Union is united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide and dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families and creating a more just and humane society. SEIU members are winning better wages, health care, and more secure jobs for our communities, while uniting their strength with their counterparts around the world to help ensure that workers, not just corporations and CEOs, benefit from today's global economy.
