Date:4/15/2009

NEW YORK, April 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by Joseph A. Califano, Jr., Chairman and President, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University:

Congratulations to New York State Governor David Paterson and Karen Carpenter-Palumbo, Commissioner of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services for creating The Addictions Collaborative to Improve Outcomes for New York (ACTION) initiative and recognizing how substance abuse and addiction affects state agencies whose mission encompasses public safety, health, education, and welfare. The ACTION initiative is a great step forward in the fight against substance abuse and addiction and I commend the Governor and the Commissioner for making New York state a leader in recognizing the societal and economic costs of untreated substance abuse.
