LOS ANGELES, March 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following event was announced today by the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles:
What: The Greater Los Angeles Red Cross is hosting a lunch reception and grand opening of a state-of-the-art Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which is ready to be activated during major disasters, including earthquakes and wildfires -- even a disaster the size of Hurricane Katrina. A video with earthquake footage will run throughout the event.
Who: More than 40 senior fire and police department members and officials from local governments and school districts around the Southland will get a sneak peak of the EOC. Tours will be provided by Red Cross Emergency & Disaster Response team members and Paul Schulz, Red Cross Chief Executive Officer. (A Spanish-speaking team member is available for interviews.)
When: Thursday, March 19, 2009, 11:00 a.m. -- 2:00 p.m.
Where: American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles
1355 Ohio Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90025 (located on the grounds of the Veteran's Administration)
Why: The new EOC -- outfitted with high-tech radio, video and communications equipment, including a satellite uplink -- is where all Los Angeles Red Cross operational decisions are made during ever-changing disaster scenes. Red Cross leaders decide when and where Red Cross shelters are opened, the number of disaster volunteers required to assist at the shelters and the quantity of food, cots and other supplies needed.
Other: The EOC features video capability of up to 12 screens to access media feeds, system status data, map and computer feeds. Radio communications are accessible between the Red Cross and its government and community partners around the entire L.A. Basin. Red Cross volunteers and staff are grouped in service areas including Logistics, Individual Client Services and Public Affairs. Acoustical and lighting engineers provided input into designing the room.
The Greater Los Angeles Red Cross opens a state-of-the-art Emergency Operations Center to respond to disasters.
