Staff at Arizona Drug Addiction Treatment Center Starts Teen Sobriety Support Group at Local High School
Date:2/28/2015

Flagstaff, AZ (PRWEB) February 28, 2015

Kaylie Corrigan, Outdoor Supervisor at Back2Basics Outdoor Adventures drug and alcohol treatment center, and current student obtaining her Masters degree in social work at Arizona State University, has implemented a weekly forum in psychoeducation on substance use for teens at the local alternative high school in Flagstaff, AZ as part of her studies.

“Even though these students are young, there’s a big need for support and counseling at the high school and junior high school level,” said Corrigan.

Corrigan has experience working in the addiction realm at Back2Basics Outdoor Adventures, where she goes out in the field — camping, hiking, kayaking and facilitating group therapy — with current residents on the path of recovery.

She pulled her resources at Back2Basics Outdoor Adventures and recruited recent graduates of the program to come and speak in the high school forum.

“I knew former residents at Back2Basics would make great guest speakers because of their closeness in age to the high school kids,” said Corrigan. “With some of our residents graduating the program at 19-years-old the students can easily relate more often than myself, a parent, teacher or counselor can.”

The students aren’t the only ones who benefit from the forum says Corrigan. “I think it’s beneficial for Back2Basics alumni to participate, as it makes them feel more confident in how far they come in their sobriety, and also allows them the opportunity to give back.”

The forum occurs every Thursday during school hours, for one hour. Everything shared is kept confidentially as it would in any therapy or counseling session.

Corrigan said that it has been challenging finding students who are serious about sobriety and not just trying to skip class, but that there are benefits to working in a public setting versus private.

“There’s more gratitude from [the student’s] end, than in a private sector.” she said. “The school is providing a resource to families who don’t typically have access to the advanced therapy tools that Back2Basics has.”
