Spiritual Care Summit '09 Underscores Importance of Spirituality in All Aspects of Care

Dr. Corn will offer models of care that effectively overcome the obstacles that exist among physicians, patients, chaplains and others.
  • David Deane PhD, assistant professor of theology at Atlantic School of Theology in Nova Scotia, Canada, will discuss, "Imagining Well-Being: How our Perspectives Shape the Way We Care." With a firm belief that health should not be defined by consumer capitalism that promotes "survival of the fittest," Dean will invite attendees to explore how faith communities and traditions can participate in, and take responsibility for, the perception of what a "normal" healthy body and mind ought to be.

  • Ada-Maria Isasi-Diaz PhD, professor of ethics and theology at Drew University in Madison, NJ, and founder and co-director of Drew's Hispanic Institute of Theology, will present, "Embracing Diversity and Caring: A Matter of Justice." Encouraging attendees to embrace diversity as preferable to sameness, Isasi-Diaz will explore how embracing our unique differences strengthens our solicitude - our ability to care about, care for and care with.

  • The final plenary session will be presented by Pamela Cooper-White PhD, professor of pastoral theology at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, and co-chair of the Person/Culture/Religion Group of the American Academy of Religion. Serving as the "village weaver" she will circulate among the attendees, listen to the speakers and weave together the concepts and practical ideas discussed throughout the conference.
