Spinal Cord Injury Preventative Measures in Sports
Date:9/27/2013

Hudson, FL (PRWEB) September 27, 2013

Football season has started and young athletes all over the country are packing their schedules with practices and games. The Bonati Spine Institute wants to advise on taking the proper precautions during the busy sports season so these athletes can avoid any life-threatening spinal cord injuries.

According to an August 19 article on CBSAtlanta.com, a high school football player died after taking a hit during a scrimmage game. To read more, please visit: http://www.cbsatlanta.com/story/23175119/how-spinal-cord-injuries-happen.

The player was hit in such a way that his spinal cord was severed, having been hit high up in this third vertebra, resulting in his neck being broken. In the article, Atlanta Falcons’ team physician Dr. Brandon Mines explained that there are a few factors that can result in death or serious injury. It does not require a hard hit, if taken at the wrong angle and high up in the first, second and third vertebra, these hits can be fatal. While these types of injuries are rare, as Mines later said, there are precautions that players can take.

Athletes should take pre-participation exams to physicians can ensure the player has full neck range-of-motion and there are no other risk factors involved, like a history of previous injury. Players should also receive adequate conditioning during practice and prior to any games, including strengthening head and neck muscles. Proper tackling techniques should also be included in training.
