Sonoma Developer Oakmount Senior Living Marries Architecture With Nature to Recreate Tuscany at Varenna

Demand for Finer Senior Living Expected in Coming Years

SANTA ROSA, Calif., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Nature provided the idyllic climate and scenery at Varenna. Oakmont Senior Living LLC did the rest. Varenna is a perfect example of a development that benefits from 25 years of experience in every facet of senior residence design and construction.

The luxurious new continuing care residential community sets a grand and unparalleled stage for retirement. From classical cast stone columns to arched patios and wrought iron railings to hand-carved beams, Varenna marries an amazing location, exquisite designs and first-class services and amenities for seniors of all ages.

Its goal: Create a community that infuses everyday retirement living with the ease and elegance of a five-star Italian resort. "We wanted the design to reflect the Tuscany region and give our residents the feeling of vacationing at home," said William P. Gallaher, Oakmont's president and CEO and a Sonoma County native. "Our experience as a senior living builder let us recreate the feel of the region and still build with the specific needs and interests of our residents in mind."

With an eye to building for the next generation of retirees, the picturesque property was purchased in 2002. Demographics point to significant growth in CCRC's. Their appeal is obvious. They provide a much needed stage in retirement living that until now hasn't been met. They want to live a healthy, vibrant lifestyle and communities like Varenna provide that along with safety.

"As the boomers are aging they want choices. Varenna caters to people who are looking for a level of service and lifestyle that embraces the best life can give, and we have meet that expectation and then some," says Gallaher.

Groundbreaking occurred in 2005 and since thousands of local employees have benefited including local subcontractors. Varenna employs about 60 people, not counting the local companies that provide products and services.

When designing Varenna, Oakmont made room for a comprehensive menu of amenities. Among them are two dining areas, spa and exercise facilities, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, movie theater, cocktail lounge, business center, wellness center, library, First Community Bank and post office, country store, salon, spa, art studio and card rooms. One of the most remarkable extras is its Wine Cave. The room took months to create as workers and artists transformed a square concrete box into an earthy, inviting and highly functional wine cellar where residents can dine, entertain and protect their favorite vintages.

Design ties to both Tuscany and the Sonoma wine country carry through to the community's grounds. Meticulously planned and accessible gardens connect the neighborhoods, the Villeta, the lake and adjacent Fountaingrove Golf and Athletic Club. Open, inspiring architecture make both indoor and outdoor common areas anything but.

To help retain the best people, Oakmount included considerably lower than market rate staff apartments on the property -- an unprecedented arrangement among U.S. retirement communities.

"With our on-site living we are able to provide those who work for us affordable living that is convenient for them. And in return they work for us longer making it better for our residents -- who so often get very attached to those who are with them daily," said Gallaher.

Now that Varenna is finished, Oakmont will turn its energies towards completing another AegisLiving Signature Community, Fountaingrove Lodge in Santa Rosa specifically targeting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. It will be the first of its kind in the country.
