Silver Shield Masks Assist in the Fight Against Flu
Date:5/1/2009

Silver Shield facemasks offer an additional level of protection. Their patented antimicrobial layer incorporating a silver based microbicide significantly reduces the virus accumulated on the mask surface during use.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 1, 2009 -- This week over 2,000 people in Mexico have contracted the swine flu. More than 100 people have died from it, and there are cases now confirmed in the United States, Canada and Spain. Health officials worldwide are scrambling to stop the spread and the Centers for Disease Control are urging Americans to take precautions to avoid becoming infected or transmitting the virus.

These precautions include washing hands frequently to avoid infection from contaminated surfaces and covering coughs to avoid airborne transmission.

Facemasks reduce the potential for infection from inhaling flu viruses by trapping virus aerosols on the mask surface.

Silver Shield facemasks offer an additional level of protection. Their patented antimicrobial layer incorporating a silver based microbicide significantly reduces the virus accumulated on the mask surface during use. This reduces the risk of secondary transmission from touching the mask surface.

Silver compounds have been used for centuries to provide a safe and effective method of controlling dangerous pathogens.

The ability of silver compounds to kill microbes was first studied in 1893 by the Swiss scientist K. Von Naegeli, who named this phenomenon the oligodynamic effect. While several metals exhibit this effect, silver is by far the most potent, demonstrating efficacy at Picomolar concentrations. Equally important, silver is much less toxic to man and other higher organisms compared to other metals that possess this property.

Wearing the masks in Japan is currently considered a common courtesy for fellow work mates and pedestrians with the understanding that wearing them while infected with a mild cold or virus might prevent others from contracting their illness.
