Shinobi Cyber’s Integrated Solution Delivers a Much-Needed Endpoint Security Paradigm: Positive Control

Shinobi Cyber today announced the Shinobi Defense System™ for the US market to block known and unknown cyberattacks and prevent your data from being read by untrusted outsiders. Shinobi Cyber’s products protect more than 1 million PCs at over 1000 customers in Japan, including government offices, major banks, technology companies and major utilities, and is now available in English speaking markets for the first time.

“Despite all the security technology available today, the number of data breaches and cyberattacks continue to grow dramatically,” says Tom Lindeman, CEO of Shinobi Cyber. “This is in part due to the sophistication of attacks extending far beyond traditional malware; however, the largest cause of data loss continues to be due to a company’s own employees.” Current research shows that 2016 was a massive year for cybercrime with 4 billion leaked records (a 556% increase from 2015) and 10,000 new vulnerabilities discovered. “Instead of focusing your efforts on external and internal threats, a better solution is to take positive control of your endpoint security,” says Lindeman.

Positive Control
Positive control simply means IT Security Administrators can specify everything that can happen in the environment they control. It is impossible to catch up with the ever-expanding universe of attacks – both variants of existing as well as new, yet-to-be-created malware. Also, it is unrealistic to expect users never to make mistakes leading to data loss – forcing them to behave like security experts can only lead to trouble. At Shinobi Cyber, the position is that organizations shouldn’t invest in fighting these losing battles. Taking a positive control approach allows Security Administrators to control everything running on endpoints as well all the ways data can leave an organization in a centralized, failsafe manner.

Shinobi Cyber is the first cybersecurity company in the world to use API / Kernel level monitoring for both whitelisting attack prevention and data loss prevention.

Full Spectrum Whitelisting
The US Government has strongly recommended whitelist-based cybersecurity defense since October 2015 when they released the NIST Whitelisting Guidelines. More recently, the Department of Homeland Security released a new Threat Alert (TA17-117A) with the top mitigation being to use whitelist-based security to provide the strongest defense against outside attacks. Today’s typical whitelist solutions, however, while better than blacklisting only provide basic protection at an application level which can miss deeper attacks coming through scripts and .DLLs, such as the recently leaked CIA hacking tool called "Ricky Bobby". Shinobi DeepWhite™ uses proprietary API / Kernel level whitelisting technology able to catch and block any unauthorized actions on endpoints, including zero-day and non-malware attacks. This is what Shinobi Cyber refers to as Full Spectrum Whitelisting. DeepWhite Shinobi’s more than 15 years of history at their Quality Evaluation Center in Tokyo, where continuous and automatic testing of all relevant APIs for combinations of every version of Windows and a set of common business applications are analyzed. The result for Shinobi customers is the most secure endpoint environment possible.

Failsafe Data Protection
Smart companies are not just protecting their endpoints from outside attacks but are also investing in security that prevents data from spilling from the inside, whether from user error or malicious insiders. Many of today’s data loss prevention solutions rely on having users remember policies and taking additional steps to secure company data. Shinobi Evolution DLP™ uses a failsafe model to protect all data by automatically encrypting each file with a unique AES256 key when it leaves a company’s “Trusted Zone.” Users can seamlessly collaborate to get their work done and not worry about remembering policies or making security mistakes that land their organization on the front page for the wrong reasons.

Patented, Proven, Certified
Shinobi Cyber’s solutions have been a leading choice in Japan for nearly two decades serving businesses ranging from 10 to more than 80,000 endpoints. The technology is covered by five international patents and both Shinobi DeepWhite™ and Evolution DLP™ are ISO/IEC 15408 EAL3 certified – the first security products in Japan with this level of international certification. Shinobi Defense System™ is deployed in a wide variety of cloud and on-premises environments, and integrates with SharePoint and Office 365 to support a wide variety of business needs.
