Shaping the New Trend of Patient Engagement: ISOQOL Annual Conference
Date:10/13/2017

As health professionals work to improve their approach to healthcare, there is a growing movement in medicine known as “patient engagement.” The patient is doing more than filling out a survey; in many cases health professionals and patients are working together as research partners.

“There is an increasing emphasis in health care and research on the importance of active engagement with patients and members of the public as partners in research,” says Dr. Kristie Haywood of Warwick University in the United Kingdom. “Such active engagement and collaboration seeks to ensure that the questions we ask and the research we conduct is relevant and meaningful to all.”

How can this new trend continue to grow? Dr. Haywood will lead an interactive discussion featuring health professionals, researchers and patient research partners entitled “Good Practice Guidance for Patient Engagement in Research” at the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL) Annual Conference, October 18-21, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“It’s often difficult to know how to get started – and knowing what works for whom, when and in what context, is important. Developing strong and genuine relationships at the start of the process, and maintaining these throughout the research journey is a key challenge. We want people (attending the workshop) to leave with a clear understanding of what they can do and how to do it.”

If you are interested in learning more about the workshop and patient engagement, or setting up an interview with Dr. Haywood, please contact ISOQOL Executive Director Colleen Pedersen at (414) 918-9797 or cpedersen(at)isoqol(dot)org.
