Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care Reminds Patients to Book Appointments Now Before 2012 Flex Benefits Run Out

The staff at Montgomery County optometrists, Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care, would like to remind families that medical FSA, or flexible spending accounts, will only allow 2012 funds to be used until December 31, 2012. After that time, any money that goes unused will be lost to the individual.

Employer-sponsored flex spending accounts allow families to contribute money, deemed for medical expenses, so that income is deducted from pay before Federal, State or Social Security taxes are calculated. This means that contributors reduce their income tax, sometimes by hundreds or thousands of dollars, depending on the contribution.

“The most important thing is for Montgomery County families to recognize that FSA money is “use it or lose it.” Most flex plans allow you to withhold up to $5,000 for child care, in addition what is put away for Mom and Dad’s medical expenses. While it’s great for helping lower tax rates, that’s an incredible amount of money to let go to waste,” said Dr. Alan Glazier of Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care.

As long as the office appointment has been completed on or before December 31st, 2012, FSA participants will still have until March to submit the claims to their provider. Claims that are eligible for reimbursement at Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care Center include: fees paid to the office for services, contact lenses, eyeglasses, lens replacements, elective treatments and copays on covered expenses.
