Seven QHR Hospital Clients Ranked Among Best of Best In Coding, According to Ingenix
Date:10/29/2008

Seven QHR hospital clients were recently recognized for their complete and compliant coding practices in Ingenix's fifth annual study of inpatient coding performance.

Brentwood, Tenn. (PRWEB) October 29, 2008 - Seven QHR hospital clients were recently recognized for their complete and compliant coding practices in Ingenix's fifth annual study of inpatient coding performance. The following QHR hospital management clients were ranked among the top 50 rural hospitals in the nation in the 2008 Ingenix Top 200 Coding Hospitals survey:

Cary Medical Center, Caribou, Maine
Harmon Memorial Hospital, Hollis, Okla.
Oconee Regional Medical Center, Milledgeville, Ga.
Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center, La Junta, Colo.
Halifax Regional Health System, South Boston, Va.
Decatur County General Hospital, Parsons, Tenn.
Newman Regional Health, Emporia, Kansas

"Given the recent changes that have been introduced to the healthcare finance world - MS-DRGs and the RAC program, to name just two - these hospitals should be exceptionally proud of both their survey ranking and day-to-day coding performance. We're certainly proud of them," said James L. Horrar, president and CEO of QHR.

"Coding accuracy and compliance are essential to a hospital's financial success, yet the increasing complexity of coding issues provides a constant challenge for hospital administrators and coders alike. For this reason, QHR encourages all of its clients to provide their staff with ongoing support and training, which leads to continuous quality improvement," he added. "These hospitals are proof that with the right tools and the appropriate guidance, coding excellence is just a keystroke away."

According to Horrar, QHR provides its hospital clients with a variety of resources designed to help improve HIM operational efficiencies, coding accuracy and compliance. QHR's Coding Community, for example, is an online resource that delivers expert answers to coders' health information questions; it also provides immediate access to a searchable archive of hundreds of coding-related Q&As. Coding Quarterly, another of QHR's offerings for coders, is an educational series that helps improve even the most experienced coders' accuracy and efficiency.

About Ingenix's Survey
According to Ingenix, its experts analyzed the recently released 2007 Medicare Provider
Analysis and Review (MedPAR) file, limiting the study to general acute hospitals with sufficient discharge volumes to support a rigorous analysis. A total of 4,607 hospitals were included in the analysis and were distributed across four peer groups:

919 Rural, Non-Teaching
1,459 Urban, Non-Teaching
1,996 Minor Teaching ( kess than 100 residents and interns)
233 Major Teaching (100-plus residents and interns)

The study included the review of more than 50 areas/indicators that point to coding excellence in the DRG and ICD09-CM systems. Of the metrics reviewed, 13 were identified as having a high correlation with coding accuracy. Hospitals were ranked within their peer groups in each of these 13 metrics and overall top performers were identified.
