Selecciones Magazine Names Lucero and Laura Posada as Supermamas of 2009
Date:4/14/2009

aura Posada pg. 60

While you may find Laura Posada on the sidelines cheering for her husband, Yankees catcher, Jorge, many call the mother of two the real champion. Shortly after Jorge Luis, their first child, was born in 1999, he was diagnosed with craniosynostosis, a condition that prematurely hardened his skull. Laura Posada talks to Selecciones about going through a period of depression and anxiety as her son underwent eight grueling surgeries that required doctors to piece his skull together -- and how she learned to turn her experience into an endeavor that helps families through the emotional and financial stress that comes with having a diagnosed child. She spends many hours working on the Jorge Posada Foundation's efforts, from fundraising to taking calls from families any time of the day.

A Giving Hand : Isabel Garcia pg. 64

When her daughter Daniela was born with cerebral palsy, Isabel Garcia moved the earth and heavens to get the help she needed. She helped organize a group called Parent to Parent of Miami, which now helps over 5,000 families each year get disabled children matched with the right academic program. "I ended up getting so much in return. I got hooked. I knew this was what I wanted to do," says Garcia.

The Art of Living: Olivia Alvarez pg. 53

Extreme poverty, domestic violence and two breast cancer surgeries have not been enough to stop Mexican-born Olivia Alvarez from becoming a lawyer, obtaining a Master's degree in education from the University of Colorado and raising three kids alone after she lost her husband in an accident. Alvarez infuses that energy in everything she does, including teaching Mexican folk dances to her elementary students in Longmont, Colorado and organizing quinceaneras parties to keep Mexican traditions alive for free. Alvarez was nominated by her daughter Stephanie, and is the first Super Mom chosen from reader entries.
