Plastic Surgeons Donate Sport Helmets to Local School Children

Seattle, WA (Vocus) October 21, 2009 -- The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) will donate more than 1,500 multi-sport helmets to the children of Seattle in an event on Wednesday, October 28, from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. The donation will be held at Leschi Elementary School in Seattle during an assembly in which the children will be fitted with the helmets and learn the importance of bicycle safety.

Superintendent Maria L. Goodloe-Johnson, Ph.D.; Holly Miller, Director, Office of Education for the City of Seattle; James Kelly, Executive Director, Seattle Urban League; and a representative from the Seattle Police Department will join ASPS President John Canady, MD, and other ASPS Member Surgeons for the helmet donation ceremony, which is open to the press.

“Many wonder why this cause is so important to the plastic surgery community and it’s because we are called upon to treat thousands of bicycle-related injuries each year,” said Dr. Canady. “Through this donation, we hope to prevent injuries and encourage more children to wear helmets, so that ASPS Members may never have to meet them in the ER.”

  • In the US, it is estimated that more than 70% of children ages 5 to 14 (27.7 million) ride bicycles. (Safe Kids USA)

  • Head injuries account for more than 60% of bicycle-related deaths, more than two-thirds of bicycle-related hospital admissions and about one-third of hospital emergency room visits for bicycling injuries. (Safe Kids USA)

  • According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, children accounted for approximately 250,000 bicycle-related injuries in 2007.

  • In 2006, an estimated 77,600 skateboard-related injuries occurred among children 15 and younger.

  • Non-powered scooter-related injuries accounted for an estimated 38,400 injuries among children 15 or younger in 2006 and powered scooter-related injuries accounted for an estimated 3,700 emergency room visits in 2006 in this age group.

ASPS, in coordination with the Seattle Public Schools, selected Leschi Elementary School to host the donation based on the ethnic diversity and need of the student body. With approximately 350 students, Leschi Elementary serves grades kindergarten through fifth. All students at Leschi Elementary will receive helmets and the remainder will be distributed to students city-wide by Seattle Public Schools, throughout the 2009-10 school year.

“We extend our thanks to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for this wonderful donation,” said Cashel Toner, Principal, Leschi Elementary. “We want our students to be physically active and engaged in play, but we also want them to be smart about safety, and these helmets will ensure that they have the equipment they need to play hard and be safe.”

Helmets 4 Safety is supported by a grant from the Integra Foundation.

“The Integra Foundation is proud to offer our continued support for the Helmets 4 Safety program, which is now in its fifth year,” said Integra Foundation Executive Director Gianna Sabella. “We all know how important helmets are in ensuring the safety of our children, and we are pleased that we can help.”

The Helmets 4 Safety event will mark the close of Plastic Surgery 2009, the 78th annual ASPS meeting, October 23 - 27, which will have hosted more than 5,000 plastic surgeons, medical personnel, and exhibitors at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. With more than 7,000 members, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The Integra Foundation is dedicated to advancing innovative medical and healthcare research and education, primarily in neurosurgery, extremity reconstruction, orthopedics and general surgery that lead to improved outcome and quality of life for patients and their communities. It is funded by Integra LifeSciences Corporation (Nasdaq: IART), a leader in developing and marketing high quality surgical instruments, innovative devices and bio-products, for use in neurosurgery, reconstructive and general surgery, and soft tissue repair.
