Scott & White Leadership Invited to National Forum on High Quality, Low-Cost Health Care
Date:8/3/2009

TEMPLE, Texas, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Scott & White Healthcare President and CEO, Alfred B. Knight, MD, recently presented at a national conference in Washington, DC titled "How Do They Do That?; Low-Cost, High-Quality Health Care in America." Scott & White Healthcare was the only Texas health care system and one of 10 health systems from across the country invited to participate in the forum.

The event was jointly hosted by The Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health, and the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at Brookings. "Re>Think Health", an initiative of the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation and the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, sponsored the event. Conference attendees included hospital chief executives and chief medical officers, practicing physicians, payers and insurers.

"We presented how our model of providing patient care at Scott & White plays into the current federal efforts to design a more efficient, high-quality way of delivering care in this country," said Dr. Knight. "While everyone presenting was proud to be invited, we all acknowledged we have a long journey ahead in continuing to improve quality and the patient experience, while reducing costs."

Among the best practices cited at the conference by Scott & White leadership:

  • An organizational structure encompassing the continuum of care, from outpatient to inpatient to post-acute and hospice.
  • A network in which over 800 physicians conduct seamless hand-offs of patients from one provider to the next.
  • A physician-led organization empowered to redesign care processes to benefit the patient and reduce waste.
  • Electronic health records (EHR) that, for over 15 years, facilitate efficient delivery of care by reducing duplicative tests and extra visits to the doctor.
  • Mission includes educating the next generation of physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals, which better allows selection of the best and brightest physicians and staff to join the organization on a permanent basis.

Publicly available quality and cost data for the selection of presenters at the conference were drawn from The Dartmouth Atlas, CMS Hospital Compare Survey, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Provider and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, and the U.S. Census. The Dartmouth Atlas uses Medicare claims data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to document variations in how medical resources are distributed and used in the U.S. at a national, regional and local market level. The HCAHPS is a standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology used to measure patients' perspectives on hospital care.
