Scott & White Leadership Invited to National Forum on High Quality, Low-Cost Health Care

TEMPLE, Texas, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Scott & White Healthcare President and CEO, Alfred B. Knight, MD, recently presented at a national conference in Washington, DC titled "How Do They Do That?; Low-Cost, High-Quality Health Care in America." Scott & White Healthcare was the only Texas health care system and one of 10 health systems from across the country invited to participate in the forum.

The event was jointly hosted by The Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health, and the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at Brookings. "Re>Think Health", an initiative of the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation and the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, sponsored the event. Conference attendees included hospital chief executives and chief medical officers, practicing physicians, payers and insurers.

"We presented how our model of providing patient care at Scott & White plays into the current federal efforts to design a more efficient, high-quality way of delivering care in this country," said Dr. Knight. "While everyone presenting was proud to be invited, we all acknowledged we have a long journey ahead in continuing to improve quality and the patient experience, while reducing costs."

Among the best practices cited at the conference by Scott & White leadership:

  • An organizational structure encompassing the continuum of care, from outpatient to inpatient to post-acute and hospice.
  • A network in which over 800 physicians conduct seamless hand-offs of patients from one provider to the next.
  • A physician-led organization empowered to redesign care processes to benefit the patient and reduce waste.
