SciHealth Inc. Helps Mary Washington Hospital Improve Emergency Department Performance
Date:12/5/2007

Patient wait times decrease by 45%

ATLANTA, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Mary Washington Hospital used SciHealth's INSIGHT as part of its ED Patient Flow initiative to dramatically improve performance. Results include a 45% decrease in patient wait times, a 50% reduction in radiology turnaround time for key emergency procedures, and significant gains in patient satisfaction. "Various performance improvement teams working on specific parts of the ED process used the INSIGHT tool very effectively. It is intuitive to them and they can quickly go in and see the latest results and how data is trending," according to James Swisher, Director of Performance Improvement.

Mary Washington Hospital, a 412-bed acute care regional hospital located in Fredericksburg, VA, 50 miles south of Washington DC, is the cornerstone of MediCorp Health System. It has one of the largest and busiest Emergency Departments in the state with over 90,000 visits per year. Many different departments were found to influence ED patient flows, and each department had its own set of data to manage. INSIGHT was used to automate a previously manual dashboard, pull together data from disparate source systems, and create alignment and visibility throughout the organization. "Virtually all healthcare organizations face ED performance challenges. INSIGHT delivers the power and flexibility to attack these challenges regardless of their Emergency Department Information System and incorporating key data from other departments and systems," adds Bill Leander, SciHealth President & CEO. "Once improvements are made, INSIGHT helps bolt them down using automated alerts so the gains don't erode over time."
