Schiff(R) Melatonin Plus Passes ConsumerLab.com Test for Ingredients and Product Quality
Date:11/11/2008

SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- In recent independent testing by ConsumerLab.com that included 17 over-the-counter melatonin supplements, Schiff(R) Melatonin Plus met standards for ingredient and product quality. The ConsumerLab.com Product Review of Melatonin Supplements is available at http://www.consumerlab.com/results/melatonin.asp.

Schiff Melatonin Plus, which promotes stress relief and a sounder sleep, passed analyses for melatonin and lead contamination. Schiff Melatonin Plus contains 3 mg of melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the human brain that sets the body's biological clock and initiates sleep. Darkness stimulates the pineal gland and causes it to produce more melatonin; daylight stops the body's production of melatonin. Taking melatonin at bedtime helps to promote healthy sleep patterns, particularly among travelers and women entering menopause.

ConsumerLab.com tested products offering 750 to 5,000 micrograms of melatonin per daily serving. The 3 mg of melatonin in Schiff Melatonin Plus is the standard amount used by many melatonin products as well as the amount recommended by human clinical studies to promote normal sleep patterns. Schiff Melatonin Plus has added Theanine, a natural compound found in green tea, and Vitamin B6, which plays an important role in brain chemistry and nervous system function. Theanine promotes stress relief and calmness and helps individuals wind down in order to sleep. Once asleep, Theanine allows individuals to sleep more soundly throughout the night.

"A lack of melatonin production is one of the reasons older adults, particularly post-menopausal women, may suffer from erratic sleep patterns," said Luke Bucci, Ph.D., vice president of research at Schiff Nutrition International. "Older adult bodies produce a small fraction of melatonin produced at a younger age, while infants produce very high
