Dr. Ben Behnam is a Board Certified Dermatologist Practicing in Santa Monica, California that specializes in all skin diseases as well as acne.

Having a routine skin check once or twice a year is very important. The skin is the largest organ of the body and throughout the years, the skin gets exposed to the sun on a regular basis. Despite the fact that most patients think that they are never in the sun, the reality is that the 5 minutes that it takes them to walk from the parking lot into their office buildings over the years add up and could cause significant damage to their skin. In southern California where it is always sunny, this effect of the sun is even more real.

In addition to the daily sun exposure, people in Southern California spend a lot of time outdoors, for example, surfing, running, or even using tanning beds, which significantly increase the risk of skin cancers. In addition to sun exposure, genetics also play a role in developing skin cancers. Patients who have a family history of skin cancers, patients who are very light who have a lot of freckles have a higher risk of developing skin cancers compared to darker individuals who do not have a family history of skin cancer.

Why is detecting skin cancer so important?
The reason is that although some skin cancers may not be fatal, there are some that could be very deadly. In fact melanoma, which is one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancers, could unfortunately be fatal within 6 months if not caught early.
