Saint Joseph's began its robotic surgical program in 2002 with Dr. Douglas Murphy, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Saint Joseph's Hospital, who served as the principal investigator for the Intuitive daVinci Surgical System(R) technology in clinical trials prior to FDA approval. Dr. Murphy also has performed more than 900 cardiothoracic procedures, including more than 550 mitral valve repairs, since 2002 and also is one of the leading cardiothoracic robotic surgeons in the world. Saint Joseph's was named the southeastern training center for the daVinci system in 2004 and has continued to expand its program to include thoracic, urologic, gynecologic and general surgery procedures.

Dr. Srivastava will be leading the International College of Robotic Surgery (ICRS) as its president and chief scientific officer for cardiac revascularization. ICRS, launched by Saint Joseph's during the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) meeting in San Francisco in January, is a non-profit robotic surgery training center for physician teams from around the world. Dr. Douglas Murphy will serve as chief scientific officer for intracardiac robotic surgery.

"Saint Joseph's is committed to robotic surgery because of the tremendous patient benefits including less trauma to the body, less scarring, reduced risk of infection and a faster recovery," says Dr. Murphy. "Through ICRS, we're committed to teaching other surgeons and their teams the minimally-invasive technology so they will embrace and use it to create viable robotic surgical programs around the world to benefit more patients."

Dr. Srivastava was born in Jodhpur, India and obtained his medical degree at J.L.N. Medical College, Ajmer, India and immigrated to the United States in 1972. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at th
