SafeShot Technologies Names Dr. Robert W. Beart as New Chief Executive Officer

Company Furthers Innovation and Patent Protection of Epiphany Auto-Retractable, Vacuum Barrel Safety Syringe

Mission Viejo, CA (Vocus) April 21, 2010 -- SafeShot Technologies, LLC, a leader in safety syringe innovation, today announced a new Chief Executive Officer – Dr. Robert W. Beart, Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Dr. Beart brings to this position an impressive curriculum vitae in medical innovation and leadership as well as a wealth of experience dealing with the needlestick issue.

The 2008 Study of Nurses Views on Workplace Safety and Needlestick Injuries by the American Nurses Association reveals Needlestick Injuries (NSIs) and blood-borne infections remain a major concern in the U.S., with two-thirds of all nurses having been accidentally stuck by a needle while working. Despite the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000, many healthcare professionals ten years later are still not being equipped with safety solutions to eliminate exposure to blood borne pathogens and sharps injuries.

“Throughout my career, I’ve been asked to sit on boards of pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology firms. When I was approached to help SafeShot Technologies take their technology to market in an effort to solve the growing global needlestick issue, which is closely related to the continued rise in infection rate within hospitals, I felt compelled to accept. There is no reason why this issue should continue to persist when an affordable solution has already been discovered. I am excited to advocate for the many healthcare professionals who have been on the other side of a contaminated needle.”

The U.S. General Accounting Office estimated that the annual out-of-pocket costs of treating U.S. hospital needlestick injuries were between $37 million and $173 million. And EcoMed, Inc. reports, globally, 60%-80% needlestick injuries go unreported. “Costs of spring-loaded, retractable safety syringes have limited the adoption of more effective technologies making way into the hospitals and places where shots are administered,” said SafeShot Technologies Co-Founder Dan Thayer. “We are very excited to have Dr. Beart lead the helm in educating the market and helping us put a safer solution in the hands of healthcare professionals on the frontlines.”

“One of the biggest global issues around syringes and the spread of disease is that used disposable syringes are often re-used,” added Dr. Beart. “The issue spans globally and locally, with doctors, surgeons, nurses, sanitation workers and even policemen being exposed on a daily basis to contaminated syringes. It’s estimated that the worldwide market for syringes and needles is estimated to reach 41 billion units in 2012, an annual growth rate of 7%. With more syringes and needles circulating, comes an increase in risk, unless proper technologies are deployed to address the inefficiencies of existing syringes – even those claiming to be safety syringes.”

As the former President of the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons; The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract; and The International Society of University Colorectal Surgeons and Commission on Cancer, Dr. Beart has made significant contributions in his field. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and had his surgical training at the University of Colorado and the Mayo Clinic. He is board certified and recertified in General and Colorectal Surgery. He worked at the Mayo Clinic from 1976 to 1992, where he pioneered the ileal pouch-anal anastomosis procedure, the introduction of stapling devices and the use of laparoscopic surgery for colon resections. He also launched the USC Center for Colorectal Diseases at USC University Hospital and USC/Norris Cancer Center and Hospital.

Dr. Beart is well recognized in the field, having published more than 350 peer reviewed articles, 100 book chapters, and multiple other presentations, movies, and books. He has served as editor-in-chief for Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, and has served on many editorial boards.
