American Lung Association Supports National Influenza Vaccination Week (December 8-14); Urges Immunization Throughout the Winter and Spring

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Health experts recommend annual influenza vaccination for nearly 250 million people in the U.S. Despite this recommendation, influenza immunization rates fall far short every year. Locally, between 20,350 and 81,400 Sacramento area residents will suffer from influenza in an average year.

Robin Shakely, Deputy District Attorney of Sacramento, and Dee Dee Abdur-Rahim, local mother of two and wife of former Sacramento Kings player Shareef Abdur-Rahim, have joined the American Lung Association of California to bring Faces of Influenza, a national educational campaign, to the Sacramento area. This multiyear public awareness initiative helps Americans put a "face" on this serious disease and recognize annual influenza immunization as an important preventive measure to protect themselves and their loved ones every year.

As a Deputy District Attorney specializing in child victims, Shakely is a strong community advocate for the well-being of Sacramento's more vulnerable populations.

"I have spent my career making sure children in Sacramento are safe. Influenza is a serious and deadly disease, but it can also be prevented. We all need to do our part and keep our children protected against influenza by getting vaccinated every year," said Shakely.

"My husband has always gotten vaccinated against influenza every year to keep him protected while he traveled during the busy basketball season, but I didn't realize my children were at risk too," said Abdur-Rahim.

"When I spoke with my doctor, she said that because my son Jabri has asthma, he is vulnerable to developing serious complications from influenza. I made sure he got his flu shot after that conversation," sai
