SMART Dares Drivers to Partake in 9th Annual Detroit Commuter Challenge in May
Date:5/7/2013

Detroit, Michigan (PRWEB) May 07, 2013

SMART, with members of Transportation Choices, is challenging metro-Detroit residents to bus, carpool, bike, walk, or telecommute at least once in May during the Detroit Commuter Challenge, a Business-to-Business Competition.

This friendly battle among local employers, including last year’s winner Compuware and downtown powerhouses Quicken Loans, Henry Ford Hospital, US Courts, and Royal Oak Beaumont encourages participating companies to urge their employees to use alternative transportation during the month of May. The company with the most alternative modes of transportation logged wins the coveted title of “Most Green” among the area.

This comes on the heels of yet another company moving their offices downtown. With the influx of employees downtown, now is the perfect time to consider alternative ways to get to work for people living or working downtown. Finding a place to park, paying for the ever-rising cost of gas, and stressing over bumper to bumper traffic can all be avoided by riding mass transit, like the SMART bus. For those unsure of trying, May is the time to do it, as participants can win prizes just by changing up their routine!

“With gas prices continuing to soar, commuters are really feeling the pinch,” said John C. Hertel, General Manager of SMART. “Riding the bus or carpooling with co-workers really allows you to save money. Plus, you get to unplug for awhile during the drive. Saving money and lessening your stress? It’s a win-win situation.”

Transportation Choices is excited to see where this year’s Commuter Challenge goes, as last year’s was a great success. Last May, almost 600 Detroiters logged alternative commutes through the Commuter Challenge. Tigers tickets, overnight hotel stays, gift cards, and bus passes were among the prizes given out to individual participants.

The short-term goal is to increase awareness of transporta
