Date:11/12/2007

h programs, which involve both the Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine, a prestigious basic research facility, and the new Smilow Research Center, devoted to translational (patient-oriented) medicine, continue to build on a proud tradition of responsiveness to urgent public health issues of the day. Graduates and faculty of the School of Medicine have contributed to the control of tuberculosis, diphtheria, yellow fever, and venereal disease; the development of vaccines for hepatitis B, polio, and cancer; advances in the treatment and prevention of stroke and heart disease; the introduction of minimally invasive surgical techniques; and a range of other medical breakthroughs.

With its post-graduate arm, NYU School of Medicine trains physicians at each stage of their profession-as medical students, residents, fellows, and doctors already in practice. The School of Medicine, offers maintains affiliations with several leading area hospitals, including Bellevue Hospital, the nation's oldest public hospital; and the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System. NYU School of Medicine ranks 4th in the nation in the percentage of alumni who go on to become full-time faculty in U.S. medical schools.
