LOS ANGELES, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org) lists March 2008 as Colon Cancer Awareness Month aiding people in preventing the onset of colon cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, "153,760 new Colon and Rectal Cancer cases are discovered annually...deaths from Colon and Rectal Cancer totaled 52,180 during 2007." Frequent Colon screenings help people either avoid Colon Cancer or detect tumors earlier than in the past. Colon Cancer often requires colostomy surgery (removing a portion of the colon) resulting in the need to wear a colostomy bag.

Early detection results in surgeons discovering and removing smaller tumors. These patients wear a bag for 6 - 18 months then, depending on the success of radiation and strength of the patient, the gastroenterologist may reconnect the colon eliminating the need for a bag. Frequently the use of the bag is permanent.
