Robert Oliver, Clearwater Professional, Explains Benefits of Medicaid Expansion
Date:6/24/2013

yees. Currently workers must get insurance from their employers or a federal health care exchange. Employers must pay fines when an exchange is used. Expanding Medicaid would provide businesses with help from the government.

Florida receives federal funding to supply approximately one quarter of its $74 billion state budget this year. It ranks number four in the country as far as funding from Washington goes. According to the article, “Direct aid to the state doesn’t include the billions of dollars in retirement and disability payments made to Floridians, defense contractors, salaries paid to federal employees and the military.” And yet lawmakers turned down the federal offer to extend health care coverage. House Speaker Will Weatherford was opposed because “he didn’t like taking federal money that has to be borrowed and didn’t believe the government will provide the funds after the first few years.”

Unfortunately, the lack of adequate health care results in many seeking treatment at emergency rooms. Federal law requires hospitals to treat all patients, regardless of insurance coverage, and many of these services go unpaid. Hospitals, doctors, private insurers, and the state end up picking up the cost. While the Supreme Court upheld Obama’s health care legislation, states such as Florida were still able to reject Medicaid expansion.

Robert Oliver, Clearwater business owner, responds this rejection. “Medicaid plays an important role in health care coverage,” he says. “Florida residents rely on coverage to afford the care they need. Those who live in assisted living or nursing homes worry about how they will pay and not being able to qualify under current Medicaid regulations. Raising the income limit would allow more people to qualify.” Robert Oliver, Clearwater business owner, helps clients to preserve their assets while qualifying for assistance under Florida Medicaid regulations.
