Richmond Ride of Silence to Honor Injured or Killed Bicyclists and Promote Safer Streets
Date:5/14/2013

Richmond, CA (PRWEB) May 14, 2013

Bicyclists, community members, and City of Richmond officials will join in a slow and quiet ride through Richmond’s downtown area and on to Point Richmond to honor cyclists who have been seriously hurt or killed in collisions with cars.

Held during the week following Bike to Work Day and during National Bike Month, the Ride of Silence aims to raise awareness among motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways and to advocate for increased bicycle safety improvements on our streets.

Participating cyclists will be asked to travel no faster than twelve miles an hour, observe the rules of the road, and remain largely silent. Helmets are required. Bicycle officers from the Richmond Police Department will be escorting the ride.

According to the Richmond Police Department data for collisions between bicyclists and motor vehicles, there were eighteen injury accidents and two fatalities in Richmond in 2012. In 2013, so far there have been three injury accidents and no fatalities.

Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, who will be participating in the Ride of Silence, stated, “Our streets need to be safe for all users and I support efforts on the part of motorists, cyclists, law enforcement and public officials to ensure that the downward trend in bike accidents in Richmond continues.”

What: Richmond’s Third Annual Ride of Silence
When: Wednesday, May 15, 2013, 5:00 pm
Where: Civic Center Plaza to Point Richmond Farmers Market and back

The Ride of Silence is organized by the City of Richmond, Richmond Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), and Rich City RIDES.
