Date:3/25/2010

Industry Veterans, Terry Johnston and Fred H. Geisler, M.D., Ph.D., Invent, Manufacture and Market Innovative Spinal Implant Devices with Unprecedented Revenue Growth in Fiscal 2009.

San Carlos, CA (PRWeb) March 23, 2010 -- Rhausler, Inc., a medical device company specializing in spinal implants and instrumentation, announced today that it has achieved record revenue growth for its innovative products. The company was founded by industry luminaries, Terry Johnston and Fred H. Geisler M.D., Ph.D, in 2008 to leverage their shared commitment to quality and innovation in spinal implants and instrumentation and their shared vision to create a leading edge resource and support platform for the spine surgeon.

In fiscal 2009, the company experienced an unprecedented year-over-year revenue growth of nearly 700%. With demand already high for Rhausler Dynamic and Semiconstrained Anterior Cervical Vertebrae Plating System, United States and international distribution expanding and the cumulated average growth rates (CAGR) for the global spinal implant market estimated at 12-15% in 2010 and 2011, Rhausler is primed for continued growth.

"The demand in the marketplace has been strong, exceeding our expectations," said Terry Johnston, president and chief executive officer at Rhausler. "The market validation for Rhausler products--including our recent licensing deal with a major spine company in Brazil, our unique distribution strategy and our dedication to 100% quality reiterates our commitment to providing superior spinal implant solutions at an effective manufacturing cost to orthopedic and neuro-spine surgeons in the US and internationally."
Prior to co-founding Rhausler in 2008, Terry Johnston co-founded TeDan Surgical Innovations, a company specializing in surgical instruments for the neuro and spine markets. In 1992, Mr. Johnston co-founded and served as President of Pacific Surgical Instruments (PSI). A couple years later, Johnston co-founded Surgical Enterprise Corporation (SEC), an instrumentation company with several patented products worldwide. Both companies were sold to Cardinal Health in 1999. Johnston’s prior experience includes Vice President of Research and Development and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Aesculap, the world’s largest surgical instrument company. Under his leadership at Aesculap for nearly a decade, the company launched the first cervical plate into the U.S. market. Johnston’s career also includes a career at Codman (a Johnson & Johnson company), the oldest surgical instrument company in the United States. A former military veteran, Mr. Johnston holds 6 United States patents in the field and a Bachelor of Science degree from UNLV in Economics.

Fred H. Geisler, M.D., Ph.D., a former neurosurgeon at John Hopkins, is the founder and chief neurosurgeon of the Illinois Neuro-Spine Center at Rush Copley Medical Center. Geisler is a recognized international expert in spinal care and developing new innovative procedures. These include internal stabilization, minimally invasive surgery, and motion preserving artificial discs. He was an early developer of spinal techniques at the Shock Trauma Center in Maryland and was a founding member of the CINN Institute for Spine Care and an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Rush Medical College, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL. He has published numerous articles in the field of acute spinal cord injuries and has spent the last 15 years spearheading clinical trials in the areas of artificial discs and cervical plates, including clinical trials for one the first artificial discs launched into the U.S. market. Geisler is a board certified neurosurgeon with over 20 years of experience. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Washington University and received his M.D. in Neurosurgery from State University of New York at Buffalo.

“As a practicing neurosurgeon with over 20 years in the field and extensive research in the area of acute spinal cord injuries and cervical implants, I am not surprised by the immediate demand for Rhausler products,” said Fred H. Geisler, M.D., Ph.D. “In fact, Rhausler’s cervical plating set, including its semicontstrained and dynamic cervical plates, bones screws and complementary instrumentation is not only of the highest quality but also one of the easiest systems for both the nursing staff and surgeons to master.”

Dynamic and Semiconstrained Anterior Cervical Vertebrae Plating System
The Rhausler Medical Cervical Plating System allows the surgeon flexibility during anterior cervical surgery to use either a Semiconstrained or a fully Dynamic cervical fixation plate. With both cervical plate stabilization options included in the same set, intraoperative changes can easily be made based on the surgical findings. The use of the same unique and patented locking bone screws throughout the system minimizes the insertion tools required, making it an easy system for both the nursing staff and the surgeon to learn.

The innovative Semiconstrained and Dynamic Plating system is a suite of offerings that includes the Semiconstrained Cervical Plating System, the Dynamic Cervical Plating System and Color-coded Titanium Locking Bone Screws and Angulation.

The titanium plates are designed for use in single and multilevel anterior cervical intravertebral internal stabilizations and arthrodesis surgeries from C2 through C7. The cervical plates feature a low profile design and are available in one, two, three, and four level designs. They also conform to a patient’s anatomy because of their trapezoidal shape. In addition, both dynamic and cervical plates are designed to articulate with one another for situations in which two cervical plates in a long construct are required by the surgeon.

Both the Dynamic and Semiconstrained cervical plates use the same innovative Color-coded Titanium Locking Bone Screws to provide the ultimate in operative flexibility. Rhausler’s innovative, locking bone screws feature a unique, patented technology which provides neuro- and spine surgeons with a quick and easy locking system, a one-step screw driver, which allows for both placement and locking, and screws available in Self-Tapping and Self-Tapping, Self-Drilling styles. For example, the screw driver includes a locking shaft flush to the handle with a hexed locking mechanism. The bone screws feature a locking cam and can easily be removed from the caddy by engaging the hex and then rotating the handle. Once the locking shaft is engaged, the screws are ready for placement. After put firmly in place into the plate, the locking mechanism is rotated clockwise 1/16th of a turn to secure the bone screw. In addition, the screws provide several confirmations to verify that the bone screw is locked - tactile, auditory and visual. All Dual Drill and Screw Guides are designed for using the awl, drilling, tapping, and bone screw placement and support cephalad bone Screw placement, caudal bone screw placement, multilevel fusions, and bi-cortal and uni-cortal bone screw placement.
