Retirement Won't End Influence of Arkansas Physician on Families and Marriages
Date:2/24/2010

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- For 34 years, Dr. James Arkins has been caring for the health needs of thousands of families in Northwest Arkansas.  But thanks to a gift by The Walton Family Foundation, Dr. Arkins' legacy of caring for couples and families will continue following his recently announced retirement.

Thirteen years ago, Dr. Arkins and his wife Anne were invited to speak at marriage conferences around the nation by FamilyLife, the world's largest marriage ministry.  Since its inception in Little Rock in 1976, more than 2 million guests have attended FamilyLife's Weekend to Remember marriage events.  Through the years, tens of thousands of military personnel, first responders, pastors and others have received scholarships through the Weekend to Remember scholarship fund.  This gift, in Dr. Arkins' honor, will enable more couples to strengthen their marriages.

"For decades, thousands of families throughout Northwest Arkansas have trusted and loved Dr. Arkins.  And as he and Anne have spoken to couples at our Weekend to Remember marriage conferences, tens of thousands more all over the country have benefited from their wisdom, insight and humor," said Dr. Dennis Rainey, president of FamilyLife.  "Now through the generosity of The Walton Family Foundation and in honor of Dr. Arkins' work through the years, more couples will find hope and help for their marriages."

Dr. Arkins is a graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Pharmacy and the University of Arkansas College of Medicine and served as a family practice physician in Bentonville, Arkansas.  Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Arkins spent six years as a registered pharmacist in Fayetteville.  He is a founding elder of Fellowship Bible Church of Northwest Arkansas and has served as a board member of Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas, Bank of Bentonville, Bentonville/Bella Vista Rotary Club and the Bentonville/Bella Vista Chamber of Commerce.  It is the desire of the Walton Family Foundation to honor Dr. Arkins for his faithful service as a physician in Northwest Arkansas.

For more than three decades FamilyLife has focused on the mission of using biblical principles to build healthier marriages and families.  FamilyLife works in 100 countries around the world to help to transform lives and restore hope through its Weekend to Remember marriage conferences, Homebuilders couples studies, FamilyLife Today radio broadcasts, Hope for Orphans orphan care ministry, FamilyLife publications, and the internet.  For more information visit FamilyLife.com.
