Research Identifies How Obesity Genes Work
Date:7/15/2013

Vienna, VA (PRWEB) July 15, 2013

ShopPharmacyCounter.com is offering a summer sale of PhenObestin 37.5, a dietary supplement intended to increase energy for exercise and reduce hunger, as new research shows that the “obesity gene” works by increasing hunger. The existence of an “obesity gene” has long been known, but until now researchers have been unable to find out exactly how it works until now. A new study led by Rachel Batterham of University College in London has that was published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation on July 15, 2013 outlines for the first time the way that this gene – known as the FTO gene – causes people to gain weight.

The study is summarized in a Reuters article published on July 15, 2013 by Ben Hirschler that is entitled “Scientists find how ‘obesity gene’ makes people fat.” According to the article, about one-sixth of the population has a version of a gene known as the FTO gene that increases their chances of suffering from obesity by as much as 70 percent. The article says that the British researchers conducted tests that determined that the gene works by increasing the blood levels of ghrelin, a hormone that induces hunger at the same time that it makes the brain more sensitive to the increased hormone that hunger causes. The study’s lead author Rachel Batterton spoke of the study’s findings and said, “It’s a double hit.” The article quoted Steve Bloom from the Imperial College of London as saying that the discovery only explains one cause of obesity out of many, but that it is nonetheless “an important step forward” in order to understand the varying factors that can cause someone to become obese.

It is important to remember that despite the existence of genes that make obesity more likely, these genes do not by themselves determine someone’s fate in terms of weight loss. A report by the Harvard School of Public Health entitled “Genes Are Not Destiny” describes how genetic factors alone cannot be responsible for the increases in obesity in the United States during the last four decades. According to the report, the gene pool has remained relatively stable even as obesity rates have increased, meaning that the increases in the obesity rate are caused by behavior much more than genetic factors. Also, the report argues that people who have obesity genes can overcome them through proper diet and exercise.

The research outlined above shows the decisive importance of lifestyle changes in preventing and overcoming obesity.
