Rescheduling of First NuvaRing Lawsuit Trials in State, Federal NuvaRing Lawsuit Litigation, Reports Wright & Schulte LLC

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) April 15, 2013

Wright & Schulte LLC, an experienced defective medical device injury law firm representing numerous women in NuvaRing lawsuit s, notes that the first trials in state and federal NuvaRing litigation s have been rescheduled. According to a Case Management Order dated March 5th, the first trial in hundreds of NuvaRing lawsuits currently pending in New Jersey Superior Court, Bergen County, has been postponed until June 17, 2013. (Docket No. BER-L-3081-09 MT) Meanwhile, court documents indicate that the Judge overseeing NuvaRing lawsuit claims in a multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri, has rescheduled that litigation’s first trial for October 2013. (In re NuvaRing Products Liability Litigation, No. 4:08MD1964 [E.D. Mo.])

NuvaRing side effect lawsuit s pending in both litigations allege the birth control device caused serious, life-threatening injuries, including pulmonary emboli, deep vein thrombosis, heart attacks, blood clots and stroke. According to court records, more than 200 NuvaRing lawsuit s are pending in New Jersey Superior Court, while more than 1,000 have been filed in the Eastern District of New Jersey.

NuvaRing was the first and only once-a-month vaginal birth control ring, and is touted as having the same efficacy as birth control pills or the patch in preventing pregnancy, but with more convenience. The product’s labeling states that the vaginal ring is expected to be associated with similar risks to that of birth control pills. However, Plaintiffs in NuvaRing lawsuits allege that NuvaRing actually poses higher risks than those associated with oral contraceptives. They further accuse the Defendants of concealing information regarding the increased risk of thrombotic events posed by the contraceptive device.

According to a study published by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, NuvaRing raised the risk of blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, by 56% when compared to older birth control pills. Last summer, two additional studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine and the British Medical Journal indicated that users of NuvaRing faced a higher risk of suffering dangerous blood clots, as well as heart attacks and strokes.

Data from the FDA indicates that NuvaRing has been named a suspect in more than 5,400 reports made to the agency’s Adverse Events Database, More than 1,200 of those reports involved pulmonary embolism, while another 800 involved cases of deep vein thrombosis. Just over 160 of the NuvaRing adverse events reported to the FDA involved a death, while another 300 were deemed life-threatening.
