Representative Richard Gephardt Sits Down With...( Former Democ...),Health

Former Democratic Congressman from Missouri, Richard Gephardt speaks with EHRtv on EHR implementation and the state of Healtcare IT in America.

The former Democratic Congressman from Missouri, who also served as the 22nd Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, sat down with Eric Fishman, MD, EHRtv's Founder and CEO. The two discussed the state of PHRs, EHRs and Healthcare IT today. The former congressman's expertise in these areas is well known. He was one of the founding architects of HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which insured patients' right to privacy and access to their medical records. "Health IT is critical to making the healthcare system work better, to be able to get the data we need to improve the quality of, and control the costs of healthcare," Gephardt told Fishman.

He then went on to say that EHRs and Healthcare IT has been something the government has talked about for a longtime, but thanks to the stimulus package, finally something is being done about it.

In the interview with EHRtv, Gephardt also introduced a Personal Heath Record (PHR) solution called My Medical Record. He serves on the Board of the company. "It is a very competent Personal Health Record which I feel very strongly about, both in protecting personal privacy, and in engaging people to take an active role in their own health status and healthcare." Said Gephardt.
