WASHINGTON, March 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement of Matthew L. Myers, President, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids:
We applaud Rep. Frank Pallone (NJ-6) for his strong leadership in advancing legislation to grant the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to regulate tobacco products. Among other things, this legislation would crack down on tobacco marketing and sales to kids, stop tobacco companies from misleading the public about the health risks of tobacco use, and empower the FDA to require changes in tobacco products, such as the reduction or removal of harmful ingredients.
Rep. Pallone played a critical role in winning approval of the legislation as a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Chair of the Health Subcommittee. His leadership is helping to bring about the strongest action the federal government has ever taken to address tobacco use, which is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. Every year in the U.S., tobacco use kills more than 400,000 people and costs the nation $96 billion in health care costs.
As Chair of the Health Subcommittee, Rep. Pallone knows firsthand that reducing tobacco use is critical to improving health, saving lives and saving money by reducing tobacco-related health care costs. Unbelievably, despite the harm they cause, tobacco products are exempt from basic health regulations that apply to other products, such as food, drugs, cosmetics and even dog food. The pending legislation would end this special protection for the tobacco industry and instead protect our children and the nation's health. We look forward to continuing to work with Rep. Pallone to enact this landmark legislation into law. There are few steps Congress can take that would make a bigger difference for our nation's health.
