Regence Praises Obama's Choice of Sebelius to Lead HHS, DeParle to Lead Health Reform Office
Date:3/4/2009

PORTLAND, Ore., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Regence praised President Barack Obama's nominations this week of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of Health and Human Services and Nancy-Ann DeParle as head of the White House Office for Health Reform. The statement is attributed to Mark Ganz, president and CEO of Regence, the leading health insurer in the Pacific Northwest:

"Governor Sebelius is an excellent choice to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a department vital to the wellbeing of the American people and in implementing the President's vision for health care. Time and again, Governor Sebelius has shown her ability to work across the aisle. Regence looks forward to working with her to help assure quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

"Likewise, Nancy-Ann DeParle will make an outstanding director of White House Office for Health Reform, carrying out the vital task of fixing our nation's broken health system. She is a leading expert and has strong experience in leading Medicare and Medicaid and commanding the respect of both Democrats and Republicans. We at Regence are eager to work with President Obama and her in bringing needed change to health care.

"In naming Kathleen Sebelius and Nancy-Ann DeParle, the President has shown care and commitment to ushering in a high-functioning health system. Regence is committed to working with the administration, leaders on Capitol Hill and all stakeholders to find appropriate health policy solutions that are also vital to getting our nation's economy moving again."

In January, Regence joined with national consumer and labor groups, the pharmaceutical industry and a medical association to work together for reform. The coalition launched a multimillion-dollar national advertising campaign to plead for health reform as a key component in righting U.S. economic woes.

In December, Regence released a national public opinion survey that found that, by a larger than two-to-one margin, Americans believe given the economic challenges the nation faces, it is more important than ever to take on health care reform as opposed to delaying tackling the issue.
