Redesigned Blue Shield of California Website Makes Finding a Doctor Online Easier and Faster

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Finding the right doctor just got a lot easier for Blue Shield of California members. The not-for-profit health plan has streamlined and simplified its "Find a Provider" service, its most frequently used online tool. Consumers can now complete searches more quickly, conduct a search based on their medical needs and find more information to help them make the best choices.

In addition to streamlining the site's navigation, Blue Shield's Find a Provider feature makes locating a doctor simpler for people who know their medical condition or the type of treatment they need, but are not sure what medical specialty is appropriate. A person could search for a doctor to treat diabetes, for example, without having to know that an endocrinologist is a specialist in diabetic care.

The site also provides more information about the physicians in Blue Shield's network, including their years in practice, languages spoken, board certifications, and education. Members can even create side-by-side comparisons of different providers they are considering.

In 2006, more than 985,000 total visitors accessed the Find a Provider feature on As part of Blue Shield's ongoing commitment to listen to its customers, the company interviewed a sample of regular users and developed these new tools to better fulfill their needs.

Blue Shield has also introduced an internal version of Find a Provider, which allows customer service representatives to more quickly and accurately answer member questions over the phone.

"Delivering easy access to quality care is one of the most important things we do," said Jan Vorfeld, Vice President of Business Transformation and eBusiness at Blue Shield. "Our redesigned website makes finding the right provider for our members as simple, convenient and effective as possible."

In addition to expanding the Find a Provider service, Blue Shield's homepage and log-in entry pages for members, providers, producers and employers have a new look and feel, designed to make it easier to do business online.
