Red Devils Expand Into Suburban DC, Receive National Komen Grant
Date:3/3/2009

Heart and Sole Stroll June 14 Registration Underway, On-line

BALTIMORE, March 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Maryland breast cancer patients in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties now have an angel on their sides: The Red Devils (TRD), a non-profit organization that funds services to improve the quality of life for Maryland breast cancer patients and their families.

Hospitals joining The Red Devils network in the suburban D.C. area are Doctor's Community Hospital, Holy Cross, Montgomery County General Hospital, Shady Grove Adventist, Suburban Hospital, and Washington Adventist. Combined, they treat more than 1,200 breast cancer patients a year.

With the addition of these six hospitals, The Red Devils network of referring partners stands at 35 members. Social workers and nurse coordinators at partner hospitals and breast centers in Baltimore City as well as Allegheny, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's and Washington Counties plus areas of the Eastern Shore now refer patients to The Red Devils service providers.

The expansion in part is funded by a recently awarded $150,000 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world's largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer.

According to TRD Executive Director Jan Wilson, the three-year grant is the single largest received in the history of The Red Devils and will help fund core support services provided by The Red Devils, including transportation to and from treatment; home-delivered meals and groceries; housecleaning; prescription drug assistance, equipment and recommended treatments; and complimentary services such as massage and acupuncture. Other critical health services, such as counseling, dental care, wellness classes and companion care, will be funded under the grant as well.

The group's largest fundraiser is coming up this June 14, the Heart and Sole Stroll, a 2.4-mile non-competitive walk for charity's sake around Columbia, MD's Centennial Lake. The walk begins rain-or-shine at 10:00 a.m. and registration is now underway on-line at www.heartandsolestroll.org.

Founded in 2002, The Red Devils is a Baltimore-based 501 (c) (3) organization. Services are free to recipients and are not based on economic need, but the toll breast cancer takes on the individual and family. Visit the web site at www.the-red-devils.org.
