Recent Article on Harmful Weight Loss Supplements Underlines the Usefulness of Solutions Actually Proven to Work, Says Dr. Michael Feiz
Date:8/25/2015

In an article published August 18 by the San Diego Union Tribune, the author, after speaking to several medical professionals with a focus on weight loss, came to the conclusion that most of the supplements billed to be a “cure” for weight loss could, in fact, cause more harm than good. The article notes that many of these herbal remedies have not been properly studied, and not as stringently regulated by the FDA as many prescription drugs due to the fact that they are not considered to be medications. According to bariatric surgeon Dr. Michael Feiz, obesity is a medical problem that needs a medical solution. While many patients have been able to get rid of their excess weight through a physician guided diet and exercise program, some patients find that diet and exercise simply aren’t enough. For those that think they can benefit from an extra leg-up in the fight against obesity, Dr. Feiz, in agreement with the physicians surveyed by the article, says that weight loss surgery is a proven option.

Dr. Feiz admits that there have been isolated cases of patients losing weight with these alternative methods. However, he also notes that obesity is far too detrimental to a patient’s health for them to waste time on methods that may not bring them any closer to their ideal weight.

In addition to a wealth of firsthand evidence gathered through the repeated successes of his own patients, Dr. Feiz also points to data collected over the past decade that time and time again demonstrates the success of weight loss procedures. The gastric sleeve procedure in particular, notes Dr. Feiz, has experienced a tremendous bump in popularity as more and more people realize that its benefits far outweigh any risks associated with the procedure. While many of the studies show slightly varied results, the majority of research shows that the average patient loses around 55-60 percent of their excess body weight at the two year mark after their procedure.

Despite all this, Dr. Feiz notes that there is still a place for supplements in a successful weight loss journey, as long as they are those intended to supply nutrients rather than cut calories. While the weight loss procedure itself can help patients curb their appetite, nutritional supplements are highly recommended to ensure that patients still get all of the nutrients their body needs in this new period of reduced caloric intake.

It is this insistence on practicing only what is proven by science that makes Dr. Feiz a trusted doctor for many Southern California patients considering weight loss surgery.
