Recent Article Outlining Bariatric Surgery’s Positive Effect on Urinary Incontinence Adds to the Growing List of Bariatric Surgery Benefits, says Dr. Michael Feiz

According to a June 26 article published by U.S. News & World Report, the results of a study in the most recent Journal of the American Medical Association are favorable for anyone suffering from urinary incontinence who is considering electing weight loss surgery. What’s particularly enlightening about this study, notes bariatric surgeon Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S., is that the results show that weight loss surgery was particularly effective at helping “ease urinary incontinence in the long term” compared to traditional methods of weight loss. The article says that it had been previously known that weight loss in general had been beneficial for urinary incontinence. Yet, at the three year mark after surgery, bariatric patients were doing much better at controlling incontinence than the non-bariatric control group. Dr. Feiz says that this can be attributed to the many known ways that bariatric surgery not only helps patients lose weight, but keep it off as well. According to Dr. Feiz, this is due to the combined hormonal and stomach capacity benefits of weight loss surgery:

  • Hormonal – Dr. Feiz says that one of the reasons he often recommends the sleeve gastrectomy procedure for his patients is that it has an added hormonal benefit that other procedures do not. He explains that stomachs release a hormone called ghrelin which travels to the brain and creates hunger cravings, and that production tends to be higher in obese individuals and increases as they lose weight. Because the sleeve gastrectomy involves the removal of a portion of the stomach, some of the areas that emit ghrelin are also removed, therefore lessening the amount of the hormone that reaches the brain. This often results in a permanent decrease in the hunger cravings that so frequently sabotage weight loss efforts over the long term.
  • Capacity – The greatest and best known benefit of weight loss surgery is that it permanently decreases the capacity for food, so patients will always feel full quicker into every meal. Dr. Feiz notes that the sleeve gastrectomy results in removing about 80 percent of the stomach, so patients will be satisfied with much smaller amounts of food for years to come.

Although the reduction of urinary incontinence can be a huge benefit for many patients, Dr. Feiz notes that bariatric surgery has many other positive benefits that can be truly life-saving. Many of the patients seen in the weight loss surgery before and after pictures on Dr. Feiz’s website have also shed many dangerous co-morbidities associated with obesity along with a great many pounds.
