R. P. Simmons Family Foundation Pledges $2 Million for New Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC Campus

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation announced today that the R. P. Simmons Family Foundation has made a pledge of $2 million over five years toward the capital campaign for the new Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC campus, scheduled to open in the spring of 2009.

"My wife, Ginny, and I have between us five children and 13 grandchildren whom we love dearly," said Richard P. "Dick" Simmons, head of the family foundation, adding that "we have seen firsthand the value of having such talented and dedicated medical professionals here when we needed them, and for the children who may yet need their help, we want to see that Children's will always be here."

Located in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, the new facility is situated on 10 acres with 1.5 million square feet of usable space. Its design is based on input from physicians, nurses and families -- to ensure it meets the unique requirements of pediatric health care providers and the patients they serve.

Roger A. Oxendale, Children's President and CEO, expressed his gratitude for the Simmons' gift, saying, "The rebuilding of our pediatric campus is a tremendous undertaking, and the hospital is thankful that someone of Mr. Simmons' leadership experience has endorsed our effort and that the whole Simmons family is supporting the new Children's Hospital significantly."

Since 1890, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has been a pediatric teaching hospital with a charitable mission, serving the western half of Pennsylvania. Children's provides family-centered care in more than 500,000 annual patient visits. Recognized among the elite pediatric facilities, Children's has been named one of 20 Child Health Research Centers by the National Institutes of Health, and among the top pediatric hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report and CHILD magazine.
