Quorn Foods Responds to Study Which Suggests Vegetarianism May Reduce Risk of Heart Disease
Date:2/27/2013

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) February 27, 2013

On February 27, 2013, Quorn Foods responds to recent findings suggesting that meatless meals may be the key to a heart-healthy diet.

A recent article on Web MD discusses the results of a study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. According to the research, the “risk of hospitalization or death from heart disease is almost a third lower in vegetarians than in people who eat meat and fish.” Researchers believe this is the result of the vegetarians’ lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

This study didn’t examine specific elements of the vegetarians’ diet, or the amount of meat consumed by others, or compares red meat to white meat. However, Francesca Crowe, who led the study, suggests that it is the lower intake of harmful saturated fat (combined with the corresponding higher intake of polyunsaturated fat) that helps vegetarians to have lower blood cholesterol.

The article states that the researchers examined a body of men and women, of whom 34 percent were vegetarian. Tracked from 1990 to 2009, the volunteers recorded instances of heart disease. “The researchers found that vegetarians had a 32% lower risk of developing heart disease than those who ate fish and meat,” reports the article.

Quorn Foods representative David Wilson comments on the research, saying that these are promising results but that the correlation is hardly new. “Many studies have shown that vegetarians seem to have a reduced risk of problems like coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity,” says Wilson. “A carefully-planned, nutritionally sound vegetarian diet is generally lower in the dreaded sat fats and cholesterol, but it’s important to keep a lot of diversity in what you’re eating. That’s one small reason we focus on meat-substitute products, since they can be used as a stepping stone to make the diet you already have a little more heart-healthy.”

Quorn Foods launched nationally in the US in 2002. Unlike other vegetarian food companies, Quorn foods use mycoprotein: a naturally occurring, healthy form of protein that replicates the taste and texture of meat while being significantly lower in saturated fats and calories. Quorn Foods offer a wide range of products including ready to serve meals, food for your barbecue, breaded meat substitutes, snacks and components to make your own meals from scratch. The wonderful taste of Quorn meatless meals provides the taste of the foods you love without sacrificing nutrition.
