Quantros Produces Video Detailing Enormous Problem of Preventable Medical Errors Plaguing The U.S. Healthcare System
Date:3/13/2009

Tens of Thousands of Americans Die Unnecessarily Every Year From Preventable Medical Errors

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 13, 2009 -- In support of National Patient Safety Awareness Week, Quantros, a leading provider of safety, quality and compliance solutions for the healthcare industry, has produced an educational video that exposes the staggering numbers of Americans who die from preventable medical errors annually. The company hopes that the sobering video will shine a spotlight on the enormity of the problem and promote increased vigilance and awareness among consumers and healthcare providers.

As many as 98,000 patient deaths are estimated to occur every year in the U.S. because of medical errors and more than half of them are preventable, according to the video. This is equivalent to losing one commercial jumbo jet airliner full of about 270 passengers each day, every day of the year or about 11 preventable deaths every hour of every day.

Preventable medical errors lead to more deaths than those from breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and traffic accidents combined. Medication errors alone are estimated to injure at least 1.5 million Americans every year plus they add to healthcare costs by $3.5 billion annually.

Quantros President, CEO and CMO Dr. Sanjaya Kumar, said the most disturbing thing about the statistics is that the average American patient has no clue about the possible dangers they face when receiving healthcare. "Many people get extremely nervous when they travel by air, for example, but rarely give a second thought when they take medications prescribed by their physician," said Kumar. Yet, there are 2 to 3 million hospital admissions that experience a medication error each year.

Kumar stressed that deaths caused by medical errors do not typically make the national media and are largely ignored compared to other fatalities. But he added that by bringing the problem to the nation's attention improvements in both safety and quality of care are not only possible but more than likely.
