Tens of Thousands of Americans Die Unnecessarily Every Year From Preventable Medical Errors

The company hopes that the sobering video will shine a spotlight on the enormity of the problem and promote increased vigilance and awareness among consumers and healthcare providers.

As many as 98,000 patient deaths are estimated to occur every year in the U.S. because of medical errors and more than half of them are preventable, according to the video. This is equivalent to losing one commercial jumbo jet airliner full of about 270 passengers each day, every day of the year or about 11 preventable deaths every hour of every day.

Preventable medical errors lead to more deaths than those from breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and traffic accidents combined. Medication errors alone are estimated to injure at least 1.5 million Americans every year plus they add to healthcare costs by $3.5 billion annually.
