s, Schmidt realized he was one of the lucky ones. Unlike many people in the rehabilitation hospital, he had a strong personal faith and loving support from his family, friends and the entire motorsports community. To this day, Schmidt says he couldn't imagine surviving this process without his strong faith and knowing there was a purpose for his life after the injury.

After many months of rehabilitation, and able to once again breathe on his own, Schmidt's remarkable sense of giving turned his attention toward helping the dozens and dozens of paralysis patients he'd met through the course of his own treatment. Through the success of these initial efforts, it wasn't long before Sam and several of his closest friends formed The Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation.

Mr. Schmidt's vision in creating the Paralysis Foundation (SSPF) is to find a permanent cure for those who have been afflicted with chronic and acute paralysis. The day-to-day mission focuses on helping individuals overcome spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders by funding scientific research, medical treatment, rehabilitation and technological advances. This research benefits stroke victims and people diagnosed with ALS, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. SSPF funds its national Day at the Races program and quality of life grants to organizations throughout the country benefiting people with paralysis and other life challenges. SSPF also provides college scholarships for people with spinal cord injuries/paralysis. The Foundation works tirelessly in its advocacy efforts both locally and nationally on behalf of the disabled.

Punch Energy's LIVE BETTER AWARD(R) is part and parcel to the company's fundamental belief in community responsibility, and represents the first of several high-profile programs and events scheduled for 2009 specifically focused on serving those most responsible for their success.
