Public Justice and Synergy’s Foundation Present the Inaugural Illuminating Injustice Award to Karen Bartlett
Date:8/12/2014

ORLANDO, Fla. (PRWEB) August 12, 2014

Public Justice, in partnership with Synergy’s Foundation for Those with Special Needs, recognized Karen Bartlett of New Hampshire as the recipient of the new Illuminating Injustice Award during the Public Justice Annual Gala & Awards Dinner on Sunday, July 27, 2014 in Baltimore, Maryland. Bartlett was awarded a $25,000 check from Synergy’s Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that is dedicated to helping those with special needs and provides monies to charitable organizations that promote and protect the civil justice system.

In 2004, Karen Bartlett took a generic medication which burned two-thirds of her body. She was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare and sometimes fatal drug reaction and was left disabled and legally blind. Her dedicated lawyers sued the drug maker for inadequate warnings and design defect. A New Hampshire jury said the drug maker should pay $21 million for pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and for medical and legal expenses. In 2013, the United States Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision (Mutual Pharmaceutical Company, Inc. v. Karen L. Bartlett; Case No. 12-142), decided to let the generic drug maker off the hook because of Federal Preemption.

The purpose of this new award is to highlight just one of the many clients Public Justice’s members have represented who have suffered a catastrophic injury and were unable to get the just compensation they deserved.

“We hope this award helps Karen and her family in some small way to deal with the injuries she has suffered. The award hopefully will heighten awareness of these types of unfortunate situations,” said Synergy Settlement Services’ CEO, Jason Lazarus.

The evening ended with outgoing Public Justice president, Theodore Leopold reciting a quote from Robert Kennedy that encapsulates what Public Justice and Synergy Settlement Services stand for: “Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
