Professional Insurance Plans Encourages the Nation to Celebrate Fibromyalgia Education and Awareness Month

Professional Insurance Plans, an independent insurance agency located in Lexington, KY, encourages the nation to celebrate Fibromyalgia Education and Awareness Month. As a professional liability insurance provider for chiropractors across the country, the agency feels that it is important for all to learn and become aware of this syndrome that affects an estimated 10 million of Americans.

According to the National Fibromyalgia Association, the definition of Fibromyalgia (FM) is, “a common and complex chronic pain disorder that affects people physically, mentally, and socially.” It is characterized by a collection of signs and symptoms, including chronic widespread pain, sleep disturbance, multiple tender points, fatigue, psychological distress and more.

While awareness for Fibromyalgia has grown over time, the amount of United States government funding for this syndrome ranks in the bottom 10%, according a financial report on April 13th, 2013 from the National Institutes of Health website. While there is no cure for FM, funding may allow those in the industry to work on improving treatments and/or possibly finding a cure. Treatment for FM focuses on relieving symptoms and improving functionality. Various types of therapy have also proved to be effective for some, including massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, yoga and more.
